We marked the deaths on a map in little black tallies, every day we counted the numbers and they had come to a strong incline. You sat in the dust by the flames playing with a cattail and you asked me “When will it be over?” The smoke drifted into open sky above us and I tried to count the stars. The map was held together by rivers and railroads and lakes. And we were held together by a commonplace drive: Hope. Chapter Twelve I wake up and Genesis is right by my side, and that’s weird because I didn’t fall asleep with her next to me. In her hand is a roll of bandage. Chapter Eleven There were too many. There were too many to defeat comfortably, and they’re not even human anymore. It’s like they don’t care about disguising themselves anymore. The aatxe were weird looking things. They where humanoid, and too tall. They had red skin, like all the blood was at the surface and they had orange eyes. They also had bull-like, pale horns on their head.The only thing that can kill them is the owlam, and we only have one of those, so Peregrine and Genesis switched off with it while me and one of them used the Kalis from the fallen enemies. Chapter Nine So we’re out on the town and man I’m giddy, because we’re going to scare the crap out of these guys! Genesis is wearing one of my coats over her still bloody white dress. To our disappointment, though, the bloody was dry and crusty. Genesis dampened it, which helped a bit. She’s quietly talking to Peregrine, their heads together in a silent huddle. Chapter Eight I want things how they were, because before this, Pike and I were Pike and Peregrine and everyone knew us. Chapter Seven It’s twelve and where is Genesis, because she usually woke me up at six. I put the key Peregrine’s parents gave me when we were ten into her door, and try to open it as quietly as I can because Genesis insisted on sleeping on the couch, so Peregrine can have her room. I walk in and Genesis is sound asleep on the couch. It’s not surprising that Peregrine isn’t up yet, she usually hides in her room until she has to go somewhere or she is absolutely so hungry she can’t stand it anymore.
